Product image sizes for Etsy, Amazon and eBay

Each marketplace has its own minimum size, preferred shape and background rules. Here they are side by side, with what each one means when you're padding or resizing your photos. Platforms change these, so the sources are linked below the table.

Etsy

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels in both width and height, and says the first photo should be at least 635 pixels in each direction. The first photo should be landscape or square. Etsy shows thumbnails in different places as square, portrait and landscape crops, so keep the product well inside the frame, away from the edges.

• Formats: JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG or HEIC. Animated GIFs and transparent PNGs aren't supported.
• File size: Etsy warns that files over 1 MB may not finish uploading on slow connections.

For padding: a 2,048 × 2,048 square with a 5% or 10% margin meets the size recommendation and survives Etsy's crops better than a tight crop does. A high-quality JPEG at that size is usually well under 1 MB.

Amazon

Amazon accepts images from 500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side, and zoom works from 1,000 pixels; Amazon's moderators describe 1,600 pixels or more as optimal. JPEG is preferred, with PNG, TIFF and non-animated GIF also accepted.

The main image has the strictest rules: a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the product filling most of the frame (moderators cite 85 to 100%), and no added text, logos, borders or watermarks. Additional images can show the product in use.

For padding: white padding is pure white, which suits Amazon's main-image background. Keep the margin small so the product still fills the frame: with a 5% margin, a photo's longest side covers 90% of the square; at 10% it covers 80%. The original photo's background also has to be pure white. A light grey studio background will show as a grey box inside the white padding and may not pass.

eBay

eBay requires at least 500 × 500 pixels and recommends about 1,600 × 1,600. Square (1:1) and wide (16:9) photos look best across listings and search results. You can add up to 24 photos, and the first becomes the main photo.

• Formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, WebP, HEIC and AVIF, up to 12 MB each.
• Background: white is generally best; a darker backdrop can suit shiny items.
• No added graphics: eBay asks sellers not to add badges, logos, copyright notices or watermarks, which can affect search placement.

For padding: a 1,600 or 2,048 pixel square matches eBay's recommendation directly.

What resizing can't fix

Every platform asks for sharp, well-lit photos. A larger canvas doesn't add detail: a 700-pixel supplier photo on a 2,048-pixel square still has 700 pixels of product.
